A night monkey staring out of total darkness, its huge eyes catching the light

Coffee for the night shift

Something in the trees is wide awake.

He has eyes the size of moons, he hoots like an owl, and he has never once gone to bed at a reasonable hour. Meet Aotus, the night monkey, and the coffee we named after him.

Night monkeys wake at dusk and go to sleep at sunrise. We built our coffee around their hours.

The Night line

Three coffees.
One long night.

Each one belongs to an hour of the night monkey's day: the first light he wakes to, the midnight he owns, and the dawn that sends him home to sleep. Every bag is 12 oz of whole bean coffee, roasted after you order it.

The Lantern bag

Dusk  /  6:47 PM

Lantern

Tangerine, wild berry, a honeyed finish

At dusk, a family of night monkeys stirs inside a hollow high in the canopy. The fireflies come on first. Lantern is that first light: sweet, sunny and quick to wake you up.

Lantern starts in Ethiopia, where coffee was first discovered, with beans dried slowly inside the fruit so they taste almost like berries. Coffee from Mexico keeps the cup crisp, and coffee from Brazil gives it a soft, rounded base. We keep the roast light so none of that gets lost.

The Nocturne bag

Midnight  /  12:00 AM

Nocturne

Black cherry, plum jam, panela, cocoa

No country on Earth has more kinds of night monkey than Colombia. At midnight, somewhere in its mountains, one of them is crossing a branch you will never see. Nocturne comes from those same mountains, and it is our favorite hour of the night.

Nocturne is a single origin from the Andes of southern Colombia, where coffee grows on mountainsides so steep they look like walls. Washed after picking, it keeps every flavor sharp and separate: dark fruit first, then the deep sweetness of panela, the unrefined sugar Colombians stir into almost everything, and a quiet cocoa finish.

The Howler bag

Dawn  /  5:38 AM

Howler

Dark chocolate, roasted hazelnut, heavy and smooth

Just before sunrise the howler monkeys start up, the loudest voice in the jungle. Our night monkey takes the hint and heads home to sleep. Howler is for the rest of us, starting the day: deep, chocolatey and made for milk.

Howler pairs coffee from Brazil, which brings the weight and the chocolate, with coffee from Mexico for a cleaner edge. The roast goes a shade past medium: bold enough to stand up to milk, never so far that it tastes burnt.

Meet Aotus

The only monkey in the Americas that lives by night.

There are eleven kinds of owl monkey, and they all keep the same hours: up at dusk, home by dawn. Spend five minutes with one and you will understand why we put him on every bag.

The best dad in the forest

Owl monkey fathers carry their babies up to 90 percent of the time. Mom nurses. Dad does nearly everything else: carrying, grooming, playing, and scooping the kids up when danger shows.

Faithful, for life

Researchers followed wild owl monkey families in Argentina for nearly twenty years and never caught one cheating. Paternity tests agreed. They were the first primates proven to be genetically monogamous.

Eyes made for moonlight

Those enormous eyes gather what little light reaches the canopy at night. They talk to each other in soft hoots, which, together with the eyes, is how they earned the name owl monkey.

Three pounds of curiosity

A grown owl monkey weighs about three pounds, roughly four bags of our coffee. Small enough to hold, if he would ever let you.

Home is a hollow

By day they sleep in tree hollows and tangles of vines, curled up in families of two to six. By night, the whole canopy is theirs.

And right now, they need us.

Most owl monkey species have shrinking populations, or so little data that nobody knows how they are doing. Forests are cleared for farming and logging, and in the Amazon, wild night monkeys were trapped for years to supply biomedical research.

Colombia, home to more owl monkey species than anywhere else, is where the pressure is greatest. That is where our 10% goes.

10% for the forest

A tenth of our profits protects the night monkey's home.

We give 10% of our profits to Fundación Entropika, a nonprofit based in Leticia, in the Colombian Amazon. Started in 2007 by conservationists working beside Amacayacu National Park, Entropika uses the night monkey as a flagship species to protect the entire forest around it.

Their legal work helped end the permits that let wild night monkeys be trapped for malaria research, and they build income with Indigenous Tikuna communities so the forest is worth more standing than cleared.

Questions

Do you sell ground coffee?

Not yet. Every bag is whole bean, which keeps its flavor until you brew. Grind just before brewing: coarse for French press, medium for drip and pour-over, fine for espresso.

How fresh is it?

Each bag is roasted after you order it and ships within days. For the best cup, brew within six weeks of opening and keep the bag sealed, away from light and heat.

Who roasts your coffee?

We choose every coffee, every roast level and every word on the bag. A U.S. roasting partner roasts each order fresh for us, which is how a small Delaware company can send you coffee roasted days, not months, before it arrives.

Where does the 10% go?

To Fundación Entropika in Leticia, Colombia, which protects night monkeys and the forest they live in. We calculate it on our profits every quarter and post each receipt on this page.

Where do you ship?

Anywhere in the United States. Shipping is $5 for one bag, $6.50 for two, and free on three or more.
